Personal Map Log · Effective 4 October 2026
Personal Map Log is an Android app for logging the places you and other people have been, lived, or want to go. This policy explains what happens to the information you put into it.
Summary
- The app has no account, no server, no ads, no analytics and no crash reporting. The developer receives nothing from the app.
- Everything you enter (places, dates, notes, names) is stored only on your phone.
- The app connects to the internet only to load the street map from OpenFreeMap. It is on by default and can be turned off in Settings.
- Your location and photos are used on the phone only. They are never uploaded, copied or stored by the app.
- Backups and exports are written only to places you choose.
What the app stores
| Data | Where it is kept | Who can see it |
|---|---|---|
| Entries: places, dates, kind, notes | The app's private storage on your phone | You |
| People: the names you add | The app's private storage on your phone | You |
| Settings (for example, the backup folder you chose) | The app's private storage on your phone | You |
People in the app are just names. They are not accounts, and the app never contacts them.
Nothing is sent to the developer or to any other company. Uninstalling the app, or clearing its data in the system settings, deletes everything it stored. Backup files you saved elsewhere stay where you put them.
Internet use: the street map
The app has a map built in that works offline. Two settings show a street-level map from the internet instead, when there is a connection:
- Street map (on by default) for the Map tab.
- Street map in place picker (on by default) for the screen where you pick a place.
When either is on and the map is shown, the app downloads map tiles and map styles from OpenFreeMap. Without a connection it shows the built-in map. Like any web server, OpenFreeMap receives your IP address and the requests for the map areas you look at. It does not receive your entries, notes, names or location from the app. You can turn both settings off in Settings → Map; the app then makes no internet connections.
Location
The app asks for location permission the first time you add a place. It reads your location once, when you open the place chooser, to centre the map on where you are. The location is not stored unless you save a place there, and then only as that entry's point on the map.
The app first tries the phone's satellite positioning (GPS). If that gives no fix, it asks Android's network location provider. On most phones that provider is a service of Google or the phone maker, which may use nearby Wi-Fi and mobile network information to estimate the position. That exchange is between your phone's system and that service; the app sends nothing itself. You can refuse location permission and place entries by searching or moving the map instead.
Photos
If you choose, the app shows photos from your phone's library that were taken on an entry's dates. It asks for photo access only when you tap "Show photos" on an entry. With media location access, it reads where a photo was taken to leave out photos from far away.
Photos are shown from your library and never copied, uploaded, or stored in the app's data or backups. Small previews are kept in memory while the app is open. You can turn the feature off in Settings → Photos, and change photo access in the system settings at any time.
Backups, exports and sharing
- Export backup and Export GeoJSON save a file to a place you pick with the system file picker.
- Automatic backup, if you turn it on, writes a backup file to a folder you choose a couple of minutes after you change something, keeping the newest 10. If that folder is synced by another app (for example Syncthing or a cloud drive), that app's own privacy terms apply to the copy it makes.
- Import reads a file you pick and adds its contents to the app.
- Share image creates a picture of your map and numbers. It leaves the phone only if you send it with the Android share sheet or save it to your Pictures folder.
Android's own backup: the app's data is excluded from Android cloud backup. When you move to a new phone with a cable or direct transfer, Android may copy the app's data to the new phone.
Children
The app collects no information from anyone, children included.
Changes to this policy
If a future version changes what the app does with your information, this policy will be updated and the effective date changed.
